Researcher in law on open data commons licences

Role

Recruitment within the Sudaco research convention between CNRS Center for Internet and Society and the Open Knowledge Foundation, which aims at developing licences models for open, sustainable, inclusive and generative data commons.

The candidate will carry out the prior scientific research, draft licenses clauses, prepare one research article which could be presented at conferences and submitted to an international journal, and contribute to the organisation of the events and the dissemination of the results of the project.

Activities 

  • Identify needs of diverse communities producing or managing data commons (including AI data) to ensure sustainability

  • Develop licenses and draft clauses (a template is available at https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4662511)

  • Organise and participate in meetings, workshops and events with communities, legal experts and partners of the project

  • Collaboration with OKFN team for the implementation of the licences (human readable summary, icons, machine-readable Rights Expression language)

  • Cleanup and maintenance of the current codebase

Required Skills

  • Prior education and experience: The candidate must have a PhD in law and research experience on open licenses, commons, FLOSS, open data.

  • Language: An excellent command of spoken and written English is required.

  • Required Skills:

    • Writing skills, ability to formulate/work on a scientific project

    • Ability to work in a team and independently

    • Organisational ability and ability to account for one's own actions

    • Ability to communicate, analyse and argue a case, summary and critical evaluation

Work Context

  • Working hours: 38.30 hours per week
  • Based at the CNRS Center for Internet and Society in Paris
  • Work from home possible 2 days a week as well as July and August

The candidate will be working with the two project's PIs Mélanie Dulong de Rosnay (researcher at CIS-CNRS) and Renata Avila (OKFN CEO) in an environment allowing mentoring, in a CNRS shared office in Paris 17ème arrondissement. CIS is a multinational team composed of researchers in sociology of technology and in law involved in French-based, European and international grants, among others on open data as commons, digital commons, data science, digital sovereignty, digital democracy, open science, and AI; a network of 650 researchers working in the Internet and Society field, including working groups on open science and digital commons policy; this partnership with the Open Knowledge Foundation on open data commons sustainability, a research cluster on open and shared knowledge.
