Open Knowledge, Climate Academy, and #semanticClimate are collaborating on an open learning initiative to answer that one specific, challenging question about AI.

The problem

  • Distortion and misrepresentation about climate change are prolific in the media and in mainstream AI chatbots. People use AI all the time, but don’t necessarily know how to question what they are told. How can climate educators leverage AI?

The opportunity

  • The Climate Academy wishes to disseminate climate knowledge to modern learners, while #semanticClimate develops a responsible and climate-friendly chatbot grounded in pre-approved literature, datasets, and conversational guardrails.

This is a collaborative initiative grounded in real-world challenges, taking place in 2026 in partnership with:

#semanticClimate focuses on semantifying climate data and resources to make climate knowledge open, machine-readable, and actionable. Our Idea is to help scientists, policymakers, and communities respond more effectively to climate change, but more importantly, our aim is to create Youth Knowledge Champions, so that together, we can take Climate Action to each and every citizen in the world.

The Climate Academy is an organisation in Europe that offers schools and students an educational framework for learning about the climate crisis with emphasis on what young people ages 16-19 can do to drive change.

Open Knowledge’s AI Learning Labs is an initiative that aims to experiment with AI, translate knowledge from social sector organisations around the world, and produce public, multilingual AI-literacy resources tailored for organisations addressing similar issues elsewhere.

Together, we will catalyse learning and develop replicable methods to help organisations build AI skills, use AI responsibly, and develop their own AI projects. All resources will be openly available at School of Data.
