Distortion and misrepresentation about climate change are prolific in the media and in mainstream AI chatbots. How would you build an alternative? Our friends at Climate Academy want to know! As part of an AI Learning Labs collaboration, the Open Knowledge Foundation and Semantic Climate are convening experts, developers, and practitioners to a roundtable conversation to explore the design decisions that go into building a responsible climate chatbot.

Including:

  • How climate knowledge is curated and made AI-ready
  • The choices around AI models and architectures
  • Responsible AI considerations (trust, bias, misinformation)

Together, we will explore different approaches for building responsible chatbots using pre-approved literature and datasets, as well as how to design conversational guardrails that reduce the risk of producing misleading or harmful content.

About us

This event is organised by:

The Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) is the world’s ultimate reference in open digital infrastructures and the hub of the open movement. As a global not-for-profit, we have been establishing and advocating for open standards for the last 20 years. OKFN is the organisation behind the Open Definition, Open Data Commons, School of Data, and tools like CKAN, Frictionless Data and the Open Data Editor. We provide services, tools and training for institutions to adopt openness as a design principle.

Open Knowledge’s AI Learning Labs is an initiative that aims to experiment with AI, translate knowledge from social sector organisations around the world, and produce public, multilingual AI-literacy resources tailored for organisations addressing similar issues elsewhere.

Together, we will catalyse learning and develop replicable methods to help organisations build AI skills, use AI responsibly, and develop their own AI projects. All resources will be openly available at School of Data.

This is a collaborative initiative grounded in real-world challenges. The Chatbots & Climate Change Lab is taking place in 2026 in partnership with:
